Mr. Schiller,
I have to say, your personal accounts of what you were forced to endure by these madmen was absolutely riveting. I only learned of the book after having seen the film, and must say I was extremely disturbed by how the script was written to make the criminals look like they were “dark heroes” as some would put it.
I have had a very troubled past, wrestling with many demons on a regular basis, family members health issues, friends drug addictions,
financial woes, and a sleuth of others that for the longest time depressed me, and made me feel like I should just give up. I often would wake up to go to work, and was upset & angered at the mere thought that I was alive yet another day.
Upon finishing your book (I was so captivated that I couldn’t seem to put it down and read it in 2 1/2 days, I came to see the true human spirit. Despite everything, you held on and kept fighting to stay alive. Realizing that my situations pale in comparison to what you went through I sat back and thought deeply about everything I personally endure. I came to the conclusion that if you were able to drive on, against all odds, and find the inner strength to rebuild
yourself, I can do the same!
I now come to work with a smile on my face. I don’t allow small things to drag my spirits down anymore. I face my anxieties and battle them one step at a time, thanks to the inspiration I received from this book.
Thank you for inadvertently shedding some light on what I was perceiving as the darkest time of my entire life. May the powers that be bless you and your family eternally.
